Recently, though, you may have started wondering whether it's doing more behind the scenes, especially as headlines linking GLP-1 medications to "biological age" have become increasingly common.

People with HIV often experience accelerated aging even when the virus itself is well managed, which made this group useful for studying whether a GLP-1 drug might counteract some of that effect.

About half of the participants received weekly semaglutide injections for 32 weeks, while the rest received a placebo. Blood samples were analyzed using multiple epigenetic clocks before and after treatment. The group taking semaglutide showed a meaningfully slower rate of biological aging compared to the placebo group, and the effect wasn't limited to one clock or one organ system. Researchers saw improvements across markers tied to inflammation, and to the heart, brain, kidneys, and liver specifically.

One epigenetic clock that measures the pace of biological aging, rather than estimating a person's biological age, showed about a 9% slower rate of aging in the semaglutide group over the course of the study. Another well-validated epigenetic clock, which is associated with the risk of age-related disease and mortality, also indicated a significant slowing of biological aging.

Why Researchers Are Being Careful With These Results

It's important to keep these findings in context. As the study authors noted, this was a post hoc analysis, meaning the original clinical trial was not designed to investigate biological aging. Instead, it was conducted to examine fat distribution in people living with HIV, and the aging analyses were performed later using blood samples that had already been collected.
