In some cases, hair loss is temporary and tied to a specific trigger like illness or stress, while in other cases hair loss is permanent, particularly when it's tied to genetics or an autoimmune condition.
Age-related hair thinning is also completely normal. As we get older, the number of hair follicles that are actively growing naturally declines, which is part of why hair usually feels less dense than it did in your twenties or thirties, even without any specific medical cause behind it.
There are several types of hair loss, and knowing which one you're dealing with helps guide treatment. Male pattern baldness is the medical term for hair loss most commonly seen in men, typically showing up as a receding hairline or a bald spot at the crown that gradually expands over time. Female pattern hair loss looks different, usually presenting as overall thinning across the top of the scalp rather than a specific bald spot or receding hairline.
Alopecia areata is a different type entirely. This is an autoimmune condition where the immune system attacks hair follicles, leading to patchy hair loss that can appear suddenly, sometimes in a small, round bald spot, sometimes more extensive. Unlike pattern baldness, alopecia areata can affect people of any age and often has periods where hair falls out and then grows back on its own.
Traction alopecia develops from repeated pull on the hair, often from tight ponytails, braids, or extensions worn over long periods. This type of hair loss can become permanent if the pulling continues for years without a break, since the hair follicles themselves can eventually stop growing hair in that area. Cicatricial alopecia is a rarer type where inflammation damages the hair follicles and replaces them with scar tissue, which unfortunately means the hair loss in that area is usually permanent.
Hair loss on its own is rarely a medical emergency, but some patterns warrant a prompt evaluation. Sudden hair loss or distinct round or patchy areas of hair loss should be assessed by a healthcare provider, as they may be a sign of conditions such as alopecia areata rather than the gradual thinning seen with pattern hair loss.
Hair loss that comes with scalp pain, redness, scaling, or itching also warrants a closer look, since these symptoms can point to an underlying scalp condition that's contributing to the hair loss. If you're experiencing hair loss along with other symptoms, like fatigue, weight changes, or irregular periods, this combination is worth discussing with a doctor as well, since hormone related causes are often easier to identify and treat once the underlying issue is addressed.
A telehealth visit is a convenient way to start this conversation, especially if you're not sure whether what you're seeing is normal aging or something that needs treatment. A doctor can evaluate your pattern of hair loss, review your medical and family history, and ask about any recent changes in your health, medications, or stress levels. Treatment depends on the type and underlying cause of your hair loss. For hereditary hair loss, topical and oral medications can help slow further hair loss and, in some people, promote hair regrowth. Other forms of hair loss may improve by treating the underlying cause, such as correcting a nutritional deficiency, adjusting a medication, or managing an underlying medical condition. These treatments tend to work best when started earlier, before extensive hair loss has occurred.
For alopecia areata, treatment typically focuses on reducing the immune system's attack on the hair follicles, which may encourage hair regrowth. While many people experience some degree of regrowth, results vary, and the condition can recur over time. Traction alopecia usually improves once the pulling stops, especially if caught before permanent damage occurs, while cicatricial alopecia is more difficult to reverse since it involves scarring rather than a temporarily paused growth cycle.
For more advanced hair loss, a hair transplant may be an option if other treatments haven't provided sufficient improvement. Because the procedure isn't suitable for everyone, a healthcare provider can determine whether you're a good candidate or refer you to a specialist for further evaluation.
Getting an accurate diagnosis early gives you the best chance of slowing hair loss, encouraging regrowth when possible, and treating any underlying condition that may be contributing to it.
