After roughly a day and a half without sleep, the group that stayed awake showed a rise in this marker in several parts of the brain involved in memory and thinking, a difference that didn't show up in the group that slept normally. This lines up with a long standing idea in sleep science known as the Synaptic Homeostasis Hypothesis. In short, it proposes that every hour you spend awake and absorbing new information adds a little more traffic to your brain's wiring, and if that traffic keeps building without a break, the system eventually runs out of room to operate efficiently.

Sleep, according to this idea, is what clears that backlog back down to a manageable level. Until now, most of the evidence for this theory came from animal studies, so seeing a similar pattern show up directly in living human brains is a meaningful step forward.




Symptoms of Sleep Deprivation You Might Notice

The effect of sleep deprivation shows up differently from person to person, but some symptoms are common across most people who are running on insufficient sleep. These include:
